The Impact of Low Thyroid Levels

What is the Thyroid Gland?

If you’re not familiar with your thyroid, now is the perfect time to learn more. Despite its small size, the thyroid plays a critical role in numerous physiological processes, making it one of the most biochemically active hormones in the body. This is especially significant for women, as the thyroid affects almost every system in the body.

Located at the base of the neck, the thyroid gland is shaped like a butterfly and functions similarly to a car engine by producing the energy the body needs to operate. While it may be small, the thyroid is closely linked to the bloodstream and brain, releasing thyroid hormones into the body that are essential for many functions such as regulating body temperature, mood, energy levels, metabolism, iron production, and menstrual cycles.

To produce these hormones, the thyroid relies on iodine, a mineral found naturally in food, as fuel. The pituitary gland in the brain works together with the thyroid and iodine to regulate the production of thyroid hormones, functioning like a gas and brake pedal. By increasing or decreasing the production of thyroid-stimulating hormones (TSH), the pituitary gland instructs the thyroid gland to speed up or slow down thyroid hormone production.

Signs of Low Thyroid Levels

Thyroid disease is often referred to as the great masquerader, as it can manifest as a multitude of conditions. Even if you don’t recognize it, an unoptimized thyroid can have serious implications for your health.

Just like how you don’t suddenly gain 200 pounds overnight, the development of a thyroid condition is gradual and takes time. We encounter women every day who are grappling with concerns about their thyroid function. Many have voiced their apprehensions to medical professionals, only to be informed that their levels are within the normal range. Despite this, they continue to experience persistent symptoms.

If you’re experiencing weakness, fatigue, dry skin, thinning or coarse hair, intolerance to cold, weight gain, constipation, muscle cramps, or irregular periods, your thyroid may not be functioning as it should.

If you are the type of person that would say “Oh man, I forgot my jacket and it is so cold!” in the middle of the spring being only 70 degrees outside, something may be wrong with your thyroid.

Thyroid Testing

When you express concerns to your doctor about feeling like a “walking thyroid disease commercial”, they will likely order a conventional thyroid test to check your TSH levels. However, this test often fails to provide a complete solution and can contribute to mismanagement of the thyroid. Even if your TSH levels fall within the “normal” range, your symptoms may still be caused by a thyroid dysfunction.

At LKN Weight Loss and Wellness, we go beyond just checking TSH levels and assess free T4 and free T3 to gain a complete understanding of our patients’ thyroid function. By looking at the full picture, we can work towards optimizing thyroid health instead of settling for normal-cy.

We believe in striving for the best life possible and feeling our best, which is why we take a thorough approach to thyroid testing and management.

The Difference Between Normal V.S. Optimized Thyroid Levels

The word “normal” may sound like a positive label, implying that you’re just like everyone else. However, in reality, being “normal” means that you only fall within the average margin of unhealthy adults. If the average adult is overweight and on the brink of diabetes, do you really want to be in the same category as them? Of course not! That’s why it’s crucial to aim for optimal thyroid function, rather than simply settling for “normal” levels. Normal thyroid function is far from perfect and keeps you operating at only 70% of your best potential. While you may survive at this level, it’s not the quality of life you deserve.

It’s important to note that there is no one perfect thyroid level that fits everyone. Each person is unique, and that’s where individualized treatments come in. However, most women tend to feel their best when their natural thyroid-free T3 levels are between 4 and 4.4 pg/mL. At LKN Weight Loss and Wellness, we believe in helping our patients achieve their optimal health, rather than just settling for normal.

Hair Loss

Women usually don’t experience significant hair thinning and hair loss until they hit their fifties, which at this point it’s assumed to be the a result of androgenic alopecia. Androgens are compounds formed as byproducts of testosterone metabolism that can harm hair follicles. So how can we say that a woman’s hair loss is the result of androgens when most women of ages 50 and older are about to hit menopause and aren’t producing hormones anymore? That means that the “androgen-sensitive hair loss” theory doesn’t support that facts.

Instead, it’s more likely that brittle, thin hair is caused by sub-optimal thyroid function. Optimizing thyroid levels may help improve hair quality and restore hair loss. Through LKN Weight Loss and Wellness we will recommend the best possible plan of action in order to achieve the results of better optimized thyroid levels that can only benefit you!

Energy

When your thyroid isn’t functioning optimally, your symptoms can compound and intensify. You may experience ongoing fatigue, which can lead to irritability and even depression. You may feel like you’re trying to run, but your body is stuck in quicksand.

We understand these challenges well, as we speak with patients dealing with these issues every day. Patients often tell us, “I work out and stay active, but I don’t have the energy. I have to force myself to do things. I just don’t feel like I should.”

Through natural thyroid optimization, we can help restore your thyroid’s ability to regulate your body’s metabolic rate, body temperature, and brain function. By breaking through the fatigue and revitalizing your body, you can feel like your best self again.

Energy

Connecting thyroid function and heart disease may not be the first thought for most people. However, the research proves otherwise. The Rotterdam Study shows that women with subclinical hypothyroidism have twice the risk of developing hardened arteries, heart attack, and stroke.

Fortunately, optimizing your thyroid function with hormone therapy can reduce your risk of heart disease by 50%. So, in addition to improving your mood and energy levels, thyroid optimization helps prevent a doubling of your cardiovascular disease risk profile.
